2018 Executive Council Elections:

Voting Ballot and Instructions

During the months of June and July 2018, the Nominations and Elections Committee solicited nominations for the Executive Council.  Individual Call for Nominations announcements were sent out via e-mail by the secretary and the Call for Nominations was posted on the association’s website.  All positions are for a three-year term.  The VP/President Elect serves one year as VP, one year as President, and one year as Immediate Past President.  This year we will be casting votes for seven positions.  All votes must be cast by Midnight EST on 01 October 2018.  Only members who are lifetime members or who have paid their annual dues by Noon EST on 15 September 2018are eligible to vote in the election.  Please vote for one candidate for each of the seven available positions. Election results will be announced at the annual conference in November in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jose da Cruz _____

Jose is a Professor of International Relations and Comparative Politics at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus. He earned a Ph.D. in political science from Miami University.  His teaching and research interests include human rights in Africa and Latin America, Latin American and African foreign policy, and international relations theory.  He currently serves on the Executive Council as Position #3.

Cathy Skidmore-Hess _____

Cathy is an Associate Professor of History at Georgia Southern University’s Statesboro Campus.  She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1995.  She has published in the areas of gender and religion in Central Africa and environment and economics in Southern Africa.  She has led study abroad and faculty development trips to West and Southern Africa.  She has been a lifetime member of the association since the 1990s.

Matthew Flynn _____

 

Matt is an Associate Professor of International Studies and Sociology at Georgia Southern University’s Statesboro Campus.  He earned his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010.  Matt’s latest publication is Challenging Immigration Detention (2017). A relatively new member to the association, he has done extensive research in Brazil.

 

Phil Szmedra _____

 

Phil is a Professor of Economics at Georgia Southwestern State University.  He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.  His teaching and research interests are in the field of development economics and public health issues in the developing world. He served with the Peace Corps in Morocco.  Phil is the current secretary of the association.

Jacek Lubecki _____

 

Jacek is an Associate Professor of International Studies and Political Science at Georgia Southern University’s Statesboro Campus.  He earned his Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Denver in 2000.  A member of the association since 2015, he is currently the Associate Editor for the Middle East for the Journal of Global South Studies.

 

Paul Rodell _____

 

Paul is a Professor of History at Georgia Southern University’s Statesboro Campus. He earned his Ph.D. at the State University of New York at Buffalo and served with the Peace Corps in the Philippines.  Paul is a lifetime member of the association and served as Executive Director for six years and is currently a member of the Editor Search Committee.

Michael Hall _____

 

Michael is a Professor of History at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus.  He earned his Ph.D. at Ohio University and served with the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic.  He is currently the Book Review Editor for the Journal of Global South Studies, the chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee, and a member of the Editor Search Committee.

 

William Head _____

 

Bill is the Chief of the Office of History at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia.  He earned his Ph.D. in U.S. Diplomatic History at Florida State University.  A lifetime member of the association, Bill chaired the committee that secured the University Press of Florida as the publisher of the Journal of Global South Studies.

Elizabeth Onasch _____

 

Liz is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.  She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University in 2014.  A relatively new member, her teaching and research interests examine how the relationships between the Global North and South shape immigration, national identities, and contemporary racial formations.

 

James Winchester _____

 

Jim is a Professor of Philosophy at Georgia College and State University.  He earned his Ph.D. from Emory University.  His most recent publication is Ethics in an Age of Savage Inequalities, which focused on the ways in which the world is interconnected. Jim is currently the chair of the Information Services Committee.

Lauren Eastwood _____

 

Lauren is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.  She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Syracuse University in 2002.  She served as the association’s secretary for three terms and currently serves as the chair of the Teaching Committee, the Editor Search Committee, and the association’s United Nations Representative.

 

Patricia Moral _____

 

Patricia is a Professor at Abraham Lincoln Teacher’s Training College in Argentina.  She graduated from the aforementioned institution in 1986.  Her research examines the influence of Abraham Lincoln in the Western Hemisphere.  A lifetime member of the association, her specialization is Critical Discourse Analysis related to political and literary issues.

Gary Kline _____

 

Gary is a Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Georgia Southwestern State University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987. Gary served as treasurer of the association for three terms.  Since 2015, he has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Global South Studies and is currently a member of the Editor Search Committee.

 

Rolin Mainuddin _____

 

Rolin is an Associate Professor of Political Science at North Carolina Central University. He earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Kansas in 1992. He has served on the Board of Editors of the Journal of Global South Studies since 1995 and is currently a member of the association’s Editor Search Committee.
