Call for Papers/Panels and Conference

36th Annual Meeting of the Association of Global South Studies
Conference Theme: The Many Global Souths
18 November – 20 November 2018

Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town
Albuquerque, New Mexico

Dear Colleagues:

The Association of Global South Studies is pleased to announce the call for papers and panel proposals for its 2018 annual meeting. Our organization, founded in 1983, is the largest organization in the world devoted to the study of the Global South. We welcome individual papers or panels from any discipline related to the study of the Global South. A typical panel would consist of four presenters, or three presenters plus a commentator. You may elect to designate the commentator or one of the presenters as panel moderator, or include an additional person to serve in that role. We will have some flexibility in the configuration of panels. Finally, while we expect that the majority of panels will be based on original scholarly research, we welcome proposals for roundtables on topics such as undergraduate teaching, graduate education, and the state of the field. Please send individual papers or panel proposals (all abstracts, of papers and panels alike, should be approximately 150 words) to Ryan Alexander at ralex006@plattsburgh.edu.

The theme of this year’s conference is The Many Global Souths. The idea of the global south has been taken to mean virtually the entirety of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Most of the countries in these regions share some common historical patterns and present realities, but the differences between them make it nearly impossible to treat the Global South as one amorphous concept. The AGSS is interested in papers and panels that examine the varying and shifting meanings of the concept of the Global South. The proposal and registration deadline is September 1.

Please take a moment to go to the following links:

Please note: you need to pay both membership and registration at the same time, and you must pre-register for the conference. Please also note that if you have not paid for registration and membership by the proposal deadline (September 1), you will not be included on the program. Finally, please note that once the program is published (by Nov. 1), no refunds of the conference registration fee will be issued.
